Jul 14, 2015
We are very proud to be listed for the 3rd year running! Congratulations to the Nova Innovation team, lead by Dr Jon Couldrick – your passion and drive is infectious! Find out the full list here.
Electricity, and the high voltage networks that deliver it, is an essential part of modern life but people are still dying as a result of preventable accidents. As the causes of accidents can be many and varied, it is not feasible to label every hazard or redesign every task. Nova’s client had an incident rate that was increasing, putting them at risk of dire consequences.
Nova devised a solution that took fighter pilots and AFL stars to the electrical industry. Using lessons learnt from the US Navy’s TopGun fighter pilot school, Nova developed a course to train the client’s best switching operators as coaches and mentors to actively engage in leading their work centres to higher standards of performance. To make key learning objectives stick, Nova used existing operators, psychologists and fighter pilots to apply crew resource management principles, behavioural philosophies and procedural techniques. In addition, as the pilot study group were madly aligned to a particular AFL club, a local AFL star was brought in to lead the course participants through a process to develop values and behaviours for switching operators.
As a result of the safety program, the energy provider now leads the nation in terms of switching performance, having halved their rate of incidents in a very short period of time. Prior to the program, the incident rate had been steadily climbing for over two years and at its peak was 26% worse than the target. Within two months of Nova rolling out the program the trend had been reversed and, within five months, the performance was better with incidents rates considerably less than the target.
Nova Systems enhances its Flight Test capability through purchase of Airbus Helicopter H135
Jul 14, 2015
Aerospace and professional services provider Nova Systems is expanding its European business (Nova Systems UK) with the purchase of an Airbus Helicopter H135 – providing the option of low cost and reliable flight trials for governments and manufacturers alike.
The aircraft will be fully instrumented and will be used to test the latest sensors, avionics and mission systems, as well as providing flight trials support for both military and civilian organisations. This will include the development of innovativeand technologically advanced sensors and electronics, to ensure they can be safely operated by pilots under the remit of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), utilising Nova’s in-house EASA approved, aerospace design organisation.
The timely option of low cost and reliable flight trials – something traditionally reserved for expensive front line platforms – comes against a backdrop of defence budget cuts.
The Nova helicopter trial capability will deliver services through the use of the best value for money twin engine aircraft in its class, coupled with pilots and engineers trained at the internationally renowned Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS).
Operated from the Kemble Aerodrome in Gloucestershire, UK, the Nova Systems helicopter project was developed by Simon Sparkes – an ex Royal Navy helicopter pilot and former Commanding Officer of ETPS.
“This project is an exciting step for the company and something which will serve to enhance Nova Systems reputation as the premier independent flight test company in Europe,” he said.
CEO of Nova Systems UK, Steve Camporeale added: “Our investment in this helicopter, and the capabilities it brings to Europe, are geared towards providing a fully integrated and high quality service to our customers, both military and civilian.”
The helicopter flight trials platform further underpins the high quality, best for capability services Nova has been providing across Europe in the areas of flight trials, integrated test, evaluation and acceptance support, flight simulator evaluation, capability management and, aerospace design.
Global CEO and Chairman of the Board Jim Whalley said “it’s a significant expansion of our UK and European service offering and will allow Nova to further cement its position as the leading provider of independent flight test services in the region”.
